Amodu is either a genius or…….
I have to be careful here because as a student of history I have discovered one thing geniuses, prophets, messiahs, great leaders, fools, megalomaniacs, and egoistic idiots in public positions who have the opportunity of getting the attention of a mob/crowd, have in common. This is the singular ability to go against the norm in reasoning, speech patterns, behavior, and lifestyle.
And then this singular characteristic as history will have it endears the people into a sycophantic follower ship wherein they are worshipped, heralded as greats, even deified or in other case they generate hatred and mistrust so deep that these ones end up being sometimes killed, or scorned for generations and then in the end become reference points for the generations, but what ever the case they make it to the history books.
Now with that in mind I leave my readers to judge for themselves the place of Amodu Shuaibu in the soon to be written annals of football history on the road to the world cup -South Africa 2010.
When asked by the always nosy Nigerian sports press about the friendly game between the super eagles of Nigeria which he is the head coach and the reggae Boyz of Jamaica -a match which was judged by 150million Nigerians who for God knows why think they understand what the technical intricacies of watching a football match is all about as lack luster, boring, uninventive ……… I could go on and on…....
Amodu showing the characteristic I so aptly illustrated in the first paragraph laughed mockingly and asked if it was the same match they played in London that Nigerians watched.
“I wonder if it was the same match we played that you people watched. That match, to me, was fantastic in terms of ball possession by the Eagles. I am happy with their performance in that match”,
Oh it gets better Amodu continues
“Perhaps you wanted us to win. I was more concerned about cohesion and their passes. And I got it because the boys played fantastically”
And he ends with flourish that would make a novelist happy
“Jamaica had nothing to lose and they put everything into the game. We were careful but against Mozambique, we will play smooth or mechanical to win the match. It is a match that we must win and all the players are aware of the importance of the World Cup to them and to Nigerians.”-vanguard
Now back to title of this article SHUAIBU AMODU is ether a genius or………….
